Endings
and beginnings NYC
12/31/01-01/01/02 I
woke up early this morning and stayed in bed until Sage called out Mommy
from his downstairs bedroom. Frey and Lee were still sleeping next to
me. Tonight was New Years Eve, the last day of 2001-the year Frey was
born, sage turned two and Lee and I celebrated thirteen years of knowing
each other. Outside across the street, City Hall prepares for the
inauguration of a new Mayor, people scurry doing last minute things. Our
neighborhood transformed by terror and destruction still goes on but
the signs o sadness remain-memorials to the dead made by out-of-town
children hang on the fence of St. Paul’s Chapel just a glance away
from where the World Trade Center once stood. Some who come to look are
charged by their proximity to tragedy, others silently trying to
comprehend the empty horror. We spend time with good friends today. Good
times, talking, laughing, indulging in the sweet passage of time.
Tomorrow the children will laugh hard and run free. 2002 eating donuts
at St. Marks Poetry Project Marathon, listening to Patti Smith play the
clarinet and denounce mindless acquisitions of more stuff. Lee reads his
wedding vows to the crowd looking for poetry while Sage gets sleepy. We
stay out late, again, looking forward to the future. |
